Former fighter pilots with the Atlanta-based management training and team-building firm, Afterburner,® spent an afternoon with Denver Broncos players and staff last week during an intensive training on the firm’s holistic continuous improvement process. The bye week allowed the players to rest and re-group, but also featured the team-building keynote that stressed the importance of communication, fostering an approach that would facilitate a zero-error environment on the field.
The Denver Broncos’ first back-to-back win places them in the top 10 standings in the league, and first in the AFC West with a record of 4-3. The team set an objective to play 60 minutes of football, and achieved this overwhelmingly. Following the game, several players stated that increased communication and being “on the same page” helped the team to garner a win against the now 2-5 New Orleans Saints.
The keynote was delivered by Afterburner CEO, Founder, & former F-15 Instructor, Jim “Murph” Murphy, along with F/A-18 Hornet Instructor Pilot Patrick “Lips” Houlahan, and US Navy SEAL Mark McGinnis. The Flawless Execution® model is a marriage of combat-derived strategy and planning components employed by military elite and a comprehensive, communication-based business approach. The combination of these two approaches results in a highly effective technique that ensures individual and team tactical alignment in any situational threat. The continuous improvement process of Plan, Brief, Execute, and DebriefSM is the driving element of the model, which includes the Six Steps of Mission Planning and the S.T.E.A.L.T.H.SM Debrief procedure.
Following the keynote, Head Coach John Fox, Quarterback Peyton Manning, and several other players participated in a lively Q & A with the Afterburner consultants, generating a conversation on how to best apply the communication-centric model to the high-energy, high-intensity atmosphere on the field.
“It was a great opportunity to work with Coach John Fox, John Elway, Peyton Manning, and all of the Broncos team,” Murphy stated. “The team came out with a great win on Sunday and we look forward to watching them continue to improve throughout the season using the skills they learned in the Afterburner experience.”
Afterburner’s work with the NFL will continue with upcoming events with the St. Louis Rams, Green Bay Packers, and the Washington Redskins. The training firm will also work again with the New York Giants, its first NFL franchise partnership--a relationship highlighted by the Giants' Superbowl XLVI win in the 2011-2012 season.
