Ensconced firmly between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is a very important shopping holiday: Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday was launched by American Express in 2010 and has had phenomenal success. This year’s Small Business Saturday is slated for November 24th, 2012 and expectations are that it will be the most successful year yet for a holiday that promotes small businesses across America.
The 2nd year of Small Business Saturday was an undeniable success. Over 100 million shoppers came out to support small businesses and consumer awareness of the day was measured to be 65%, over double the 30% awareness from 2010. Additionally, over 15,000 small businesses took advantage of the free $100 in advertising offered on Facebook.
The success of the small business promotion hinged on social media sharing, tools provided by American Express to small businesses to promote the day on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, and support from celebrities and politicians. This year, American Express has [expanded the toolkit and is including signage for small businesses to promote Small Business Saturday, a $100 advertising credit on Twitter, and a host of other promotional ideas and tips.
As a promoter of small business, Sunovis Financial applauds the efforts of American Express to encourage consumers to buy from their local businesses. Terry Robinson, the President and co-founder of Sunovis, had this to say: “Small Business Saturday is a perfect example of the mindset we try to encourage. Small businesses are the lifeblood of the American economy, and anything that promotes them is a step in the right direction. If the American people can be encouraged to support small business on a regular basis, these businesses will find it easier to expand and to attract capital for that expansion.”
It isn’t just small businesses who can profit from Small Business Saturday either. American Express is offering a $25 credit to any American Express cardholder who registers their card and then spends $25 at a participating small business on November 24, 2012. The credit is available to each card holder on an account, so if your account has multiple card holders you can get multiple credits. A full list of participating merchants can be found at the American Express Facebook.
“Small Business Saturday is a great way to support your local community and the business owners who create jobs. Join us in celebrating for small business, not just on November 24th this year, but every day,” said Mr. Robinson.
