It’s good to be reminded of just how important small details, such as labeling and chemical segregation, can be when dealing with potentially dangerous materials.

On October 22, 2012, Chad Reynolds of Allied Environmental Services, Inc. (Allied) presented a workshop at the Ohio Public Facilities Maintenance Association (OPFMA) annual conference in Columbus, Ohio. The workshop provided instruction regarding the proper storage, management and disposal of laboratory chemicals and hazardous waste, as well as maintenance and restoration of laboratory acid neutralization tanks.
Reynolds explained that the proper handling of lab chemicals and wastes is often overlooked. “In a busy school or lab environment, housekeeping and material management are often given a secondary priority," Reynolds stated. “It’s good to be reminded of just how important small details, such as labeling and chemical segregation, can be when dealing with potentially dangerous materials. And there is also a regulatory component when managing hazardous wastes, which can be overlooked," Reynolds added.
Acid neutralization tanks were also discussed, with some attendees raising questions about proper maintenance and service of these units. “As with most equipment, knowing the designed use of the equipment and conducting routine maintenance can greatly increase system efficiency and longevity. In the case of neutralization tanks, controlling what goes into them has a substantial effect on how well the system operates and how often service is required," Reynolds said.
The OPFMA is a non-profit organization devoted to the educational and professional development of public facilities maintenance employees at all levels. The organization’s annual conference is held to improve, promote and develop higher standards in the operation and maintenance of public facilities through education and peer networking.
