Cederick Tardy has turned his transformative experience – from a kid always in trouble to a young, respected war veteran, entrepreneur and non-profit founder – into lessons for parents and their sons in “The Seven Secrets: The Manual for Raising Boys to Men” and “A Flying Start: Outta This World Advice for Young Men” (http://www.cedericktardy.com).
“My parents divorced when I was in elementary school,” says Tardy, founder of STRONG Incorporated, a nonprofit focused on Strengthening, Training and Redefining Our Next Generation of families and young leaders.
“I lived with my mom. She had to work long hours then. Over the years, our relationship never developed like it should have. I had a lot of unsupervised free time and used it to make a mess of my teenage years. By 12, I was always in trouble somewhere. I was arrested for the first time at 13.”
Tardy went on to become an author, entrepreneur and combat veteran, with a vision and plan for helping underprivileged families and communities. “The Seven Secrets” addresses parents, while “A Flying Start” speaks to boys.
“‘The Seven Secrets’ is not a parenting book; it’s a guide for raising a leader,” Tardy says. “I am not a parent. I refuse to tell a mother how to parent her child. Rather, I help parents understand their young man, find his driving passion, and then nurture it so he can develop with a sense of purpose. ‘A Flying Start’ speaks to young men in need of guidance. In that book I show them what their parents need from them to enjoy life at home, and I show them how to enjoy life as a young leader.”
The foundation of Tardy’s books is forming an interdependent, parent-son relationship. This type of relationship starts with opening up communication.
“I call this the Dream Team,” he says. “My mother and I developed our relationship by working together on my first two books. The situations we had to overcome to make that project a success forced us to work with and encourage one another. I now teach mothers and their sons how to form a close relationship with a goal and purpose.”
Tardy’s books are intended for mothers who want the best for their kids. They address setting boundaries and dealing with behavior issues while continuing to work toward a greater goal.
Reviewer Grady Harp of Los Angeles writes:
“Tardy … provides insights and danger flags and confrontational healing processes that are sound … and open a window of light to parents (both single and coupled) who are attempting to cope with ‘problem kids’.”
