Last week Players Authority announced it's launching of UnCharted Territory, due to the fact that many players are being unnoticed because draft reports and charts do not provide a comprehensive look at all 102 college teams. UnCharted Territory is providing NFL scouts with a weekly report on Players who may be overlooked by NFL Teams.
Norte Dame’s inside linebacker Manti Te’o is having a winning season, individually and as a team. Although, statistically ranked #19 in the NCAA for total tackles this season, according to CBSSports, Te’o is arguably the top inside linebacker in the Nation and a potential Heisman Trophy Winner. Playing behind some of the best defensive lineman in the country, with an undefeated record of 8-0, Manti Te’o has become the new standard.
There is a linebacker who is quickly rising on the NFL Draft boards; is not a household name and far from an undefeated season, the Akron Zips are 1-8, but that adversity hasn’t stopped him. Although, not on a winning team like Te’o, he is dominating in the MAC Conference, with a young and inexperienced defensive line; landing him within the Top 30 in Total Tackles for the season, amongst the Inside and Outside Linebackers, says Richard Victor Mahee, UnCharted Territory, Mahvrick.
Kurt Mangum started his college career at The University of Washington under Coach Tyrone Willingham, after being released as head coach, Mangum left to play 2 seasons for Howard University. Subsequently, graduating at the top of his class with Magna Cum Laude cords and still having a semester of eligibility left.
“Coach Amato told me his credentials, where he has been, the players that he has coached and his vision for this new program; A coach of his caliber tells you that he wants you to come in and make an impact, it speaks volumes and I considered it an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Mangum.
Former Head Coach at North Carolina State and longtime Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Florida State, Amato joined Terry Bowden in taking over the Akron Zips Football Program. Amato has coached 11 #1 draft picks since 1984, over 6 Hall of Famers and Pro Bowlers, such as Deion Sanders, Darnell Docket and Adrian Wilson, and 18 drafted linebackers, he plans on adding Mangum to that list.
Mangum tells UnCharted Territory, “I am just trying to absorb as much information as I can, asking him questions about his previous players that stood out in his mind, like Derrick Brooks (LB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Stephen Tulloch (LB, Detroit Lions), that have gone on to the next level. I want to know what made them good and what made them great and just applying Coach Amato’s knowledge and coaching to keep improving and continue to take my game to the next level.”
Mangum’s thoughts on having the opportunity to compete in the NFL: “I never want to be satisfied, I want to contribute earlier and not only have an impact on the game, but my teammates and the organization as a whole. My goal is not just to get to the next level, but to be a contributor, to eventually become a leader and an elite professional athlete that has longevity in the NFL.”
