Today, national nonprofit and social change organization Futures Without Violence revealed the two grand prize winners of the RESPECT! Challenge, an online contest that celebrates every day role models and heroes. The RESPECT! Challenge—which launched in September with a public service announcement that featured high-profile talent including Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, and Willie Mays—awards both lucky winners with $10,000 for the nonprofit organization or school of their choice, and a VIP trip to New York City to attend the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The grand prize winners are:
•Alandra Abrams of Philadelphia, PA. Alandra wrote a thank you note about her junior high school music teacher, Mrs. Karen Michalka, who taught her about love and respect in the face of adversity, and inspired her to become a music teacher as well. Alandra chose Tilden Middle School in Philadelphia as the recipient of the $10,000 prize.
•The Saginaw High School Teen Advisory Council of Saginaw Charter Township, MI (submitted by Amanda Forsmark). A group of students from Saginaw High School created a video thanking their role models—from mothers to teachers—for teaching them about respect. The group chose Health Delivery, Inc as the recipient of the $10,000 prize. Health Delivery, Inc. operates a health center at Saginaw High School, providing students with a range of health services and programs.

“We’re so impressed by the number of creative, thoughtful, and moving entries we received for the RESPECT! Challenge,” said Futures Without Violence President and Founder Esta Soler. “The contest was intended to ignite a dialogue about the important role that parents, teachers, coaches, families, and mentors play in promoting a respectful society. The response we received exceeded our expectations and we would like to thank Macy’s and our other partners for helping to make the contest a resounding success.”
The interactive, Facebook-based contest asked participants to submit a thank you note or video honoring a person who taught them the meaning of respect and was part of a larger campaign to facilitate a national conversation about the importance of positive role models and mentors who lead by example.
Futures Without Violence received generous support in developing the RESPECT! Challenge from ideas and innovation agency AKQA; social media marketing software provider Wildfire, a division of Google; and AOL’s in-house creative team.
Macy’s, the Founding National Partner of the RESPECT! Campaign, provided national support for the RESPECT! Challenge and has a strong history of support for education and awareness programs that promote positive solutions for healthy relationships. Throughout the entire month of October, Macy’s conducted a parallel RESPECT! Challenge among its employees throughout the country.
To date, Macy’s has raised more than $5.7 million for prevention and education programs that promote healthy relationships and positive role modeling.
