Retired NFL kicker Michael Husted, who is now a kicking coach in San Diego, CA, offers kicking specialists advice on ‘confidence’ by relating it to a recent surfing trip he took to El Salvador where he encountered some of the biggest waves he had ever surfed.
In a blog post about a recent surfing trip to El Salvador, Husted makes the connection between surfing, kicking and confidence.
“Last week, I had the privilege of going on a surf trip with some friends to El Salvador,” says Husted in his blog post. “There were a total of 20 guys in our group, and many of them, were excellent surfers. I pride myself on being a good athlete, or at least I used to be a good athlete. It seems that when I turned 40, the "wheels started falling off the bus."

Husted, who has surfed for around 12 years says, “Surfing can be many things, exercise, therapeutic, spiritual, whatever you want it to be. It has a big learning curve, but all you need is that one ride on a wave to make you smile. I felt that my experience down in El Salvador was a good analogy for kicking, punting and long snapping, all though it could be used for just about anything when it comes to confidence.”
It was when Husted first arrived at the beaches in El Salvador, and saw just how big the waves were, the issue of ‘confidence’ came to mind.
“The surf conditions were consistently the biggest waves that I have ever surfed,” says Husted. “I went into the trip realizing that I wasn't in the best paddling/surfing shape. I knew that there were much better surfers on the trip and that there were going to be other excellent surfers out at the break. Needless to say, I questioned my confidence as we pulled up and I looked out at the surf.”
It was when Husted was watching these waves that he related it to his kicking career.
“During my career, at all levels, high school, college and the NFL, there were a few times when I questioned my own confidence. Confidence and attitude are amazing things in how they can affect you. From how your view life and how you perform.”
In his blog post Husted adds quotes that reinforce the importance of confidence including:
“You can't stop the waves, but you can learn how to surf. “ - Jon Kabat-Zinn
“If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life.” - Marcus Garvey
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” - Winston Churchill
And probably the one most apt for someone surfing waves larger than they've ever surfed before:
“All you need is ignorance and confidence and the success is sure. - Mark Twain
