The recently rediscovered post-war spy diaries of Guy Liddell, the then deputy director general of MI5, has revealed in an entry dated 3rd 1946 that Mr Liddell and Capt. Caiger, a pigeon expert, discussed how the pigeons and their homing instinct could be used as remote controlled homing pigeon bombers. The diaries that have been released to the National Archives in Kew, west London also refer to other “spycraft” ideas.
Other animal weapons used in WWII were Bat Bombs, a US development. The bomb shaped casing had many compartments that housed Mexican Free Tailed Bats who had small timed incendiary bombs attached to them. The bombs would be dropped at dawn and a parachute would open and release the bats.
The bats would roost in roofs and attics of buildings in hard to access areas. The incendiary bombs would start fires in the, intended targets, Japanese cities that were mostly constructed of wood and paper. Thousands of small fires would create chaos as they would all flare up at once.
