Houston, TX (PRWEB) November 01, 2012

Jennifer Tomsen, a shareholder in the Houston office of international law firm Greenberg Traurig, has been honored with the title “Pro Bono Attorney of the Month” by Kids In Need of Defense (KIND). Tomsen has been recognized for her commitment to promoting pro bono work in the firm’s office and her strong commitment to helping children in need.

Tomsen was recently profiled in an article entitled, “Showing a Clear Commitment to Pro Bono,” in the September 2012 Being KIND newsletter. She began working with KIND 10 years ago and chose the organization because cases were compelling and issues were especially important to children facing deportation proceedings, language barriers and the complexity of immigration matters, she said.

“Jennifer has been a great ambassador and role model within our office for pro bono programs like KIND,” says Doug Atnipp, co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Houston office. “Her genuine concern for children in need is inspiring and we are proud to support her efforts.”

The mission of KIND is to provide legal counsel for the protection of unaccompanied children who enter the U.S. immigration system alone. The group strives to ensure that no such child appears in immigration court without representation, and to advance the child's best interests, safety and well-being. KIND was founded by Microsoft Corporation and Angelina Jolie to create a pro bono movement of law firms, corporations, nongovernmental organizations, universities and volunteers to provide quality and compassionate legal counsel to unaccompanied refugee and immigrant children in the United States.

Tomsen focuses her practice on commercial and securities litigation and arbitration. She is a board member of the Houston Bar Association’s Animal Law Section and is co-coordinator of the firm’s pro bono program for the Houston office. In addition, she is heavily involved in the Houston community and holds memberships with the HBA Lawyers for Literacy Committee, the Houston Volunteer Program and is a volunteer tutor at B.C. Elmore Middle School.
