A study published in the journal of the American Neurological Association and Child Neurology Society provided a clear correlation between bad fats (coming from butter and red meat) and decaying cognitive functions. On the other hand, those women in the study consuming monounsaturated fats experienced an enhancement to their cognitive abilities and memory function.
Mark Slater, managing director of Ultimate Memory™ software commented on the findings: “This study has clearly shown how a good diet and a healthy weight go hand in hand with improved mental function. The findings are indeed invaluable, because people can now make conscious efforts regarding their diet that can positively affect their cognitive health.”
The study focused on how fat intake affects cognitive function in a group of women followed over the course of four years. Women consuming good fats were consistently found to score higher in the study testings, confirming an overall better cognitive performance. While there hasn’t been noted definitive results that good fats contribute directly to memory improvement, the results indicate that good fats actually keep memory and other cognitive functions fit.
Concluding on the significance of the finding, Slater said: “What’s noteworthy about this study is that applying it in actual life is not that hard to do. Protecting our memory from decline was never that easy. People just need to make some dietary adjustments in order to replace the bad with the good fats, and that’s it. Avoiding saturated fats won’t just keep the pounds off, it will also shield memory from decline.”
