Vision-Box® Deploys Self-boarding Gates at Riga International Airport

Vision-Box®, leader in automated border control systems and electronic identity solutions has concluded the installation of self-boarding gates at Riga International Airport that provide automatic passenger boarding pass control.

As part of the project “Introduction of New Services at Riga International Airport” Vision-Box has worked with the Airport in the development and deployment of self-boarding gates to help streamline passenger flow and optimize staff allocation, thus reducing queues and improving the traveler experience.

The boarding gates, based on the vb i-match® ABC eGate from Vision-Box, are able to validate both a printed boarding pass and a boarding pass displayed on a mobile device. Since they are connected to the Flight Information Systems (FIS) the self-boarding gates are able to validate the boarding pass and check that the traveler is entering the correct boarding area, at the appropriate time.

Raimonds Arājs, IT Director of Riga International Airport highlights the fact that “this project enabled us to provide a better service to those visiting us and at the same time improve the overall airport operational efficiency and passenger flow. In the first day of operation the self-boarding gates served more than 1 000 passengers and the objective is for this number to continue to rise”.

Miguel Leitmann, Senior Vice President of Vision-Box S.A., emphasized the 2 month implementation timeframe of the self-boarding gates and adds that “this project proved to be a very successful challenge in which Vision-Box demonstrated its ability to deliver and meet the Riga International Airport expectations”. Miguel Leitmann also considers that this project demonstrated the successful extension of the vb i-match® border control eGates to boarding control.

The installation of eGates is one part of the project “Introduction of New Services at Riga International Airport” with contribution from the ERDF. Within the project framework the Baggage Reconciliation System (BRS) has already been implemented and the wireless data transmission network (Wi-Fi) has been installed.

The co-financing share of the ERDF is 35% of the applied costs, or LVL 129 641.64. The rest of the project funding is provided by the airport.

The project was carried out from 19 August 2011 to 19 October 2012.
The project is being implemented under the Operational Programme 2 „Entrepreneurship and Innovation”, Priority 2.1 „Science and Innovation”, Measure 2.1.2 „Innovation”, Activity 2.1.2.2 „Development of New products and Technologies”, Sub-activity 2.1.2.2.2 „Development of New products and Technologies – Aid for Implementation of New Products and Technologies in Production”.
