“Have the drivers in your family sign our ‘No Texting Pledge’,” urges Eric Hageman, an attorney with the Minneapolis law firm of PritzkerOlsen, P.A. The firm’s Minnesota personal injury lawyers represent accident victims throughout the United States.
“Having clients injured in crashes caused by texting, we wanted to do something to help prevent these accidents,” explains Hageman. “Our ‘No Texting Pledge’ is something parents can use to help make sure their teen drivers drive safely. No text is important enough to risk the life of someone on the road.” Get the No Texting Pledge here.
Texting while driving requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, making it is by far the most dangerous distraction. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation “text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted. Sending or receiving a text takes a driver's eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent-at 55 mph-of driving the length of an entire football field, blind.”
Hageman, the father of five children, knows firsthand the positive impact parents can have when they lead by example. He encourages parents to take the pledge with their children and to pull over when they need to text. He also encourages parents to make it clear to children that just a few seconds of distracted driving can result in serious injury or death.
If parents have teens that they can’t trust to drive without texting, Hageman suggests taking other measures, including having the teen leave his or her phone at home while driving or disabling text messaging on the child’s phone.
