The Eco-Friendly Hotel Has Taken Steps to Reduce Its Environmental Impact and Preserve Maryland’s Natural Beauty and Resources.

Maryland Green Travel has just recognized The Courtyard by Marriott Chevy Chase for its impressive efforts to reduce waste and expand recycling efforts. The statewide Maryland Green Travel program, which was created to reduce the environmental impact of Maryland’s tourism industry, endorses businesses actively working to reduce their carbon footprint.

Since The Courtyard by Marriott Chevy Chase re-opened after a 2009 renovation, Maryland’s first LEED Gold certified hotel has continued to reduce energy usage and water consumption throughout the hotel. The building uses energy efficient windows and roofing, energy management systems that control HVAC units throughout the hotel, FSC certified wood, low-VOC or non-VOC paints, motion sensors to minimize electricity use, and low flow water fixtures.

The management and staff of the Courtyard have also taken a number of steps to reduce the hotel’s environmental impact. These include incorporating recycling throughout the hotel, encouraging guests to use public and alternate forms of transportation, encouraging guests to request to reuse their linen, reducing plastic water bottle usage by making water available throughout the hotel, and by using 100% wind source energy.

Additionally, Courtyard by Marriott Chevy Chase has taken measures to educate guests and other visitors about the environment and the hotel’s conservation efforts. This includes placing information on LEED and recycling efforts in all guest room directories, installing information panels at the recycling station to inform guests of the hotel’s LEED efforts, and training all management staff to tour guests throughout the hotel to showcase the LEED efforts and recycling efforts of the hotel.
