Before seeing this data, researchers would have said it was impossible to improve cognition in young healthy adults who are already performing at their cognitive best. However, a recent study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh, and published in the journal Public Library of Science One, demonstrated that healthy individuals, between 18 and 25 years of age, can improve their working memory even further by increasing their intake of Omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL®.
Prior research in rodents demonstrated that diets deficient in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids lower dopamine neurotransmission. This suggests that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids might enhance dopamine storage and release, and improve dopamine-dependent cognitive functions such as working memory.
To investigate this mechanism in humans, the Pittsburgh research team sought healthy young men and women, between 18 – 25 years of age, from all ethnicities, to boost their Omega-3 DHA and EPA intake with a supplement for six months.
Before they began taking the omega-3 supplement, all participants had blood samples analyzed to determine baseline dopamine neurotransmission, and dopamine storage and release.They were then asked to perform a working memory test in which they were shown a series of letters and numbers. They had to keep track of what appeared one, two, and three times prior, known as a simple "n-back test".
After six months of taking supplemental omega-3s DHA and EPA, the participants were asked to complete this series of procedures again, as well as have blood samples analyzed. Blood sampling showed a significant increase in both DHA and EPA post-supplementation with a concomitant increase in dopamine neurotransmission and dopamine storage and release, as well as improvement in the "n-back test.” The correlation between n-back performance, and DHA levels are consistent with reports in which higher DHA levels are related to improved cognitive performance.
