Inspired by the beautiful setting of the island of Useppa, Ken and Pat Birt offer readers their new bookUseppa: An Ongoing Journey” (published by iUniverse), a multi-faceted resource on the history of the island.

Useppa – a tiny, privately owned island off Florida’s southwest coast – is hailed as a beautiful resort island reserved only for those with an intimate understanding of the true meaning of relaxation. Though there are no cars and no cares to be found, Useppa has a long, rich history spanning back ten thousand years.

Ken and Pat take readers through the major events of the history of the island, as well as, the history of the people who have lived there. As they point out, people – famous and infamous – have shaped the myths, legends and reality of Useppa. The authors invite readers to walk the island with them and with those who touched the sands of Useppa’s beaches.

An excerpt from “Useppa”:

There was a time when what is now referred to as Useppa Island was not an island at all but part of the mainland lying in the southwestern portion of the Florida peninsula. What is now Useppa Island was more than sixty miles from the water.

Taking multiple perspectives – geological, historical, cultural, etc – Ken and Pat offer readers a wealth of information on an island of which most people know very little. “Few resources trace the history of one particular place across so many years, so many usages and so many personalities, says Ken about the uniqueness of “Useppa.” “No accurate history has been written for the layperson about Useppa.”
