For the third year, Keil Lasik Vision Center is giving the “Gift of Sight”. For every patient who undergoes a free Lasik exam with Keil Lasik between now and December 31, Dr. Michael Keil will make a donation allowing someone less fortunate to receive cataract surgery.

Keil Lasik Vision Center is kicking off the 2012 holiday season by giving a precious gift to those less fortunate. For the third year in a row, Keil Lasik is offering the “Gift of Sight” promotion to give life-changing cataract surgery to those who cannot afford it. For every patient that schedules a free Lasik exam at the vision center between now and December 31, Dr. Michael Keil will make a donation to allow someone less fortunate to have vision restoring surgery.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. The 1998 World Health Report suggested that 19.34 million people were blind because of age-related cataracts; this number represents 43 percent of all blindness in the world. This same study suggests that this number is due to increase. In the United States, cataract surgery is the most commonly performed ophthalmic procedure, and helps many of our 20.5 million Americans affected by cataracts regain their sight.

Though many of the people suffering from cataract related vision impairment seek surgery, many cannot afford to pay for this ophthalmic procedure. According to uniteforsite.org, only 10 million out of the 30 million cataract operations needed per year are actually performed. Dr. Keil explains, “Blindness due to cataracts is a widespread problem, but it is a problem that can be corrected. My staff and I encourage members of the West Michigan community to join us and help give the gift of sight this holiday season.”

Last year’s donation went to Mercy Ships who travels around the world helping those less fortunate and allowing them to receive cataract surgery and other vision restoring surgeries. MetroHealth Ophthalmology resident Zack Pearce, D.O. and attending physician Ralph Crew, D.O. contributed to this number by performing around 50 cataract surgeries. Dr. Keil is the ophthalmology residency director at MetroHealth.
