As part of its efforts to hire 100 veterans by Veterans Day this Nov. 11, Workforce Alliance has placed 186 veterans into new careers throughout Palm Beach County – nearly doubling the goal set four months ago.
"Many employers actively seek veterans because of the skills and qualities they have acquired while being involved in one of the most demanding professions in America,” said Steve Craig, president and chief executive officer of Workforce Alliance. “Veterans Day also is an excellent time to remind veterans about the full realm of employment and training services available to today's veterans and eligible spouses at our local career centers.”
Joshua Klein, a U.S. Army veteran from the Iraq war years, is one person who was recently placed into a new career as a result of Workforce Alliance’s On-the-Job Training program. Joshua had been through stressful situations while serving as a medic in Iraq that involved patient care, security and emergency room situations at a very busy hospital. With an eye to the future, he also had taken the initiative to earn a master’s degree in accounting during his nine years of military service.
As a veteran, Joshua was shown veteran preference when he came to Workforce. “I was given an instant appointment with a veteran representative,” said Joshua. “I did not have to wait in the lobby or make an appointment.”
Joshua received help from Workforce Alliance career center staff to register and effectively use the EmployFlorida jobs board, where his skills, education and army experience could be matched with potential job openings. He also met with a Workforce Alliance Business Services account manager, who determined that he would be a good candidate for the Workforce Alliance On-the-Job Training program.
At the same time, Investments Management, LLC of Boca Raton needed to fill a key position in its accounting department. The successful candidate would need the unique qualities of tact and salesmanship, as well as specific business accounting skills.
“We realized that Joshua did not have the experience we were looking for, but his military record and accomplishments showed me that he was accustomed to following procedures and dealing with people during difficult situations,” said Scott Walton, the hiring manager for Investments Management. “With the necessary training, he would fit very well into our company and this position.”
Workforce Alliance staff recommended its On-the-Job Training program as the ideal solution. This program provided funding to offset the cost of training a new employee.
With this solution, Joshua was quickly interviewed and hired by Investments Management, LLC for the accounting position, as well as On-the-Job training that matched his skills to the job.
Walton was so impressed by the results of the Workforce Alliance recruiting and On-the-Job Training programs that he has since added other positions. “We created another position in our maintenance department,” said Mr. Walton, “and recently hired an additional employee through the On-the-Job Training program.”
