Crowd labor platforms are on the rise in 2012, promising customers lower labor costs in the short term and higher-quality output in the long term.

GigaOM Pro, the technology research group of GigaOM, has published a new Sector RoadMap report titled Crowd Labor Platforms in 2012 (subscription required). The report assesses the continuing evolution and competitive market of crowd labor platforms, and examines some of the more well known platforms, such as Amazon Mechanical Turk, CrowdFlower and CrowdComputing Systems.

Crowd labor - outsourced information work that can be provisioned automatically - is used to perform intelligent tasks that machines can’t do. Ideally it is inexpensive, on demand, and elastic. Platforms providing such services are on the rise in 2012, promising customers lower labor costs in the short term and higher-quality output in the long term.

GigaOM Pro analyst Joseph Turian identified five competitive areas where the key players will strive to gain an advantage in the crowd labor marketplace. These areas were broken down and analyzed to determine how the players will drive large-scale shifts that advance their competitive position in the crowd labor platform market.

Sector RoadMaps are GigaOM’s newest form of ecosystem analysis and research. The reports identify “disruption vectors,” the key competitive areas of a market that hold the greatest potential for large-scale disruptive shifts. And they feature a new model of data visualization which illustrates the relative, weighted significance of the disruptive forces identified in the report.
