The School Supplies Gift Program, sponsored by the Utah personal injury attorneys at Christensen & Hymas, is pleased to announce that Ms. Michelle Poorte, a 3-4th grade teacher at Reading Elementary School, and Mr. Rick Richman, a 6th grade teacher at Foothills Elementary School, are the newest recipients of the Golden Apple Award.

Ms. Michelle Poorte was nominated for the award by the mother of one of her students who said of Ms. Poorte, “I can’t imagine a more devoted person to improving our community.” Ms. Poorte is beloved by mothers and students alike because of her straightforward manner and positive attitude of problem solving. In her class, “every child leaves with an elevated self-esteem.” One mother said that “she cares about [her students’] learning and shows it every day.

One mother, who has had three children taught by Ms. Poorte, said that although all three of her children had very different personalities they all loved Ms. Poorte. The love of her students undoubtedly comes from the unflagging excitement that she brings to the classroom. The way she approaches teaching causes her students to enjoy the subjects that she is teaching. “She really teaches!” Part of her success as a teacher most likely comes from the time she takes to get to know the children’s strengths and weaknesses. Ms. Poorte has the ability of teaching according to her student’s strengths without picking favorites. It has truly been an honor to recognize such a dedicated teacher. The staff at Christensen & Hymas applauds Ms. Poorte’s dedication to education, especially for the love she shows for our community’s children.

Mr. Rick Richman is a 6th grade teacher at Foothills Elementary. Mr. Richman has been in education for over 30 years. One of his talents as a teacher is his ability to make learning fun but also effective. His students always learn a lot. One thing that sets Mr. Richman apart is his focus on preparing his students for the huge change from elementary to middle school.

Mr. Richman knows that a truly good teaching job requires extra time and even extra money, and he is willing to give both. Here at Christensen & Hymas we appreciate all the years Mr. Richman has spent educating and caring for his students. The children of today are the community leaders of tomorrow and thanks to the help of Mr. Richman, we know our future leaders are in good hands.
