“The Balkan Wars in the Eyes of the Warring Parties: Perceptions and Interpretations” (published by iUniverse) is an attempt to analyze crucial moments throughout the Balkan wars, focusing on military, diplomacy, economies and culture lost and found throughout the years, as well as, the individuals that are involved.
In the fall of 1912, the Ottoman Empire was in turmoil. In addition to the Albanian and Yemen rebellions, the Empire was at war with Italy over the Libyan territory. Worse, cholera was spreading throughout the empire, leaving a decimated population in its wake. The Balkan countries decided this was the moment to rid themselves of the Ottoman Empire forever. Serbia, Greece, Montenegro and Bulgaria banded together and began a war that is still felt today.
An excerpt from “The Balkan Wars in the Eyes of the Warring Parties”:
“After agreeing on the armistice, the allies were faced with the question of preserving the territorial gains at the negotiation table. Two peace conferences had been called, one between the allies and the Ottoman Empire and the other one where the Great Powers were to confirm the settlements reached at the previous conference. Because of this the allies were faced with several problems.”
