We are at a time in history when we are not so frightened to think outside the square

The frenetic pace of today’s modern world doesn’t always acknowledge the need for cultivating a deeper spirituality, yet more and more people seem to be seeking answers to life’s most basic questions. In her new work of historical fiction, “The Art of Illumination” (published by Balboa Press), author A. M. Hamilton weaves a tale filled with wisdom designed to set readers on the path to greater understanding, awareness and enlightenment.
“We have come to an age where we are looking beyond the churches into a deeper divine world to connect with who we really are, not who we are told to be,” Hamilton explains. “We are at a time in history when we are not so frightened to think outside the square.”
Set in a monastery nestled in the north of England circa 1097, “The Art of Illumination” follows the journey of one young man as he enters the abbey during a period of political and social unrest. Told in the first person, the man narrates his many adventures there.
When the man goes to work in the monastery’s scriptorium, he learns about a mysterious book – written by none other than his father, Edwin, who was subsequently banished from the abbey and tortured – that outlines the process of getting to know God on an intimate basis. Deemed as heresy, the book’s location now appears to be unknown.
Determined to locate the manuscript and delve into its contents, the curious protagonist enlists the help of some colorful characters, many of whom are based on real historical figures. Hamilton makes an effort to stay faithful to actual events of the time and the result is an entertaining read that subtly imparts wisdom and encourages deeper thought.
“This is a story about the journey of the soul,” Hamilton explains. “It is about understanding the divine in a way that can be easier to understand. It’s a journey that we all travel whether we know it or not.”
