The results showed that people who regularly suffer from migraines are more likely to have lowered otacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responses (ABR), both of which are early indicators of impending auditory dysfunction which can lead to hearing loss. Alongside this, it was found that almost two thirds of migraine patients had one or more abnormalities in auditory electrophysiological testing. This comes despite nearly all subjects having a normal hearing level. The report was published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology.
Auditory dysfunction symptoms such as phonophobia (fear of loud noises) and tinnitus were present in 20.7% and 13.8% of participants respectively.
