HNTB Corporation today announced the addition of Carlos A. Lopez, PE, as a project director and vice president in its Austin office. Lopez retired from his position as Austin district engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation following a 33-year career with the agency.
Glenn Gregory, PE, Austin office leader for HNTB, commented on the addition, “With 33 years of transportation experience in the fastest-growing state in the country, Carlos Lopez will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to HNTB and our clients. He will be instrumental in helping HNTB continue to develop innovative solutions to address Texas’ most important transportation challenges.”
Lopez served as district engineer for the Austin District of TxDOT from July 2009 until his retirement in July 2012. He was responsible for state transportation planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance in the 11-county Austin District. Previously, he served as the director of the Traffic Operations Division beginning in 1999. He joined the division in 1988 as a special projects engineer, managed statewide traffic light synchronization programs and served as a section head and deputy division director prior to his appointment as division director.
Lopez holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
In addition to a distinguished career with TxDOT, Lopez is recognized as a transportation leader outside the agency as well. His contributions to the profession include serving as: an Advisory Council member for the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, a member of the Texas Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, a member of the Transportation Research Board, a board member for the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and a member of various traffic operations committees for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, a nonprofit, nonpartisan association that represents highway and transportation departments throughout the United States.
