From an experienced educator with infectious enthusiasm, Doing My Head In is an engaging, uplifting, and hilarious little book that reveals the greatness of a soul who has learned to laugh at a life with Parkinson’s disease and arthritis. David Atkinson, whose first name could very well be Rowan—famously known as “Mr. Bean”—because of his wit and humour, will make readers chuckle and chortle or reminisce with reverence as he shares a unique look at life with a great dose of comedy amidst tragedy.

“His approach is original, his humour enlightening, while his sensitivity shows some sombre moments from his own personal and family life. Many people will recognise some of the real-life situations that have inspired this collection,” writes Jean Holland, one of Atkinson’s former students, in the Foreword of the book. “I commend this book as an excellent read that will lift your spirit, enthrall and entertain you for many a delightful hour.”

Having devoted his lifetime to teaching, Atkinson continues his legacy even after retiring from his professional career in 2007. Through his life and his writings, he continues to use humour to share with people important lessons in life. To generate more amusement from his book, he invites readers to look at the poems with friends so they can read them to each other and better appreciate the “punch lines” which conclude many.

Atkinson’s poems are mostly inspired by everyday situations which he finds exceptionally (in some cases, illogically) irritating—hence, the title of his book. Readers will easily identify with many of the situations he uses as inspiration. With his verses, they will experience both kinds of tears—of laughter and of sadness.

Sometimes religious, sometimes mundane, sometimes nostalgic, sometimes insane, Doing My Head In is a one-of-a-kind treat that will edify and spiritually awaken readers with lessons from even the most unexpected places. That is one outstanding characteristic that, perhaps, not even “Mr. Bean” can claim for himself.

This book will be featured at the 2013 London Book Fair in London, England, on April 15 - 17, 2013.
