The condition is a serious one, with people with PAD at an increased risk for heart attack, stroke or mini stroke
(PRWEB UK) 7 November 2012
The study, led by Michael Joosten of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, found that tobacco smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels may all risk men’s development of peripheral artery disease (PAD). After following 45,000 U.S. men over a period of more than 20 years, more than 537 cases of PAD were diagnosed. 96% of men who developed the condition had at least 1 of the 4 risk factors, all of which were found to be significantly and independently associated with a higher risk of PAD.
The condition is a serious one, with people with PAD at an increased risk for heart attack, stroke or mini stroke. Naturally concerned by the findings of the investigation, Managing Director of Nicolites, Nikhil Nathwani, shares his thoughts on the subject.
“The fact that this study was conducted over such a length of time only serves to make the findings more conclusive. The connection between smoking and PAD alone is worrying, however when we consider that many go on to suffer from heart attacks of strokes, it becomes more important to take action”, explains Nikhil.
Nikhil goes on to explain how using electronic cigarettes can provide a safer alternative to conventional smoking.
“Those anxious about the effects of smoking on PAD, particularly those who fall under categories at most risk, such as men with high blood pressure, can switch to vaping. In the absence of tobacco, users are protecting themselves against the serious illnesses connected with traditional smoking.”
Nicolites continue to actively research studies and developments within the industry.
