Eagan & Minneapolis Orthdontics Offices Shares Cons of Orthodontic Treatment

For those in search of an Eagan or Minneapolis orthodontics specialist to treat themselves or their children, understand treatment also has some down sides. Arm yourself with enough information about the pros and cons when seeking a provider.

It goes without saying that orthodontic treatment boasts a number of benefits.

Most potential patients don't understand it carries some down sides to treatment if the right specialist isn't overseeing the case, or if the patient doesn't do his/her part to maintain good oral hygiene.

Hygiene is important whether the patient is in traditional braces, invisible braces or Invisalign treatment, said Eagan and Minneapolis orthodontics expert Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth. She lists the following "cons" to treatment if all doesn't go as planned:

1. Provider lacks adequate training
Some cases are easy; others complex. That's why it's important to select a provider with the proper training to handle the patient's specific case. Ask questions about qualifications, training and experience to ensure an expert is at the helm.

2. Decalcification
Enamel decalcification can result from orthodontic treatment, and often is caused by patients having difficulty with oral hygiene maintenance or neglecting proper oral hygiene, said Eisenhuth, an orthodontist who treats patients from Minneapolis, as well as Eagan.

3. Root resorption
This breakdown/loss of root structure can happen when teeth move too quickly if they're too far outside the bone. Pressure from orthodontic movement can cause it.

4. Periodontal issues
Why endure orthodontic treatment, get a beautiful smile, then encounter periodontal disease? Practice optimum oral hygiene during treatment. Gum inflammation and loss of supporting bone structure can happen when plaque isn't removed daily.

5. Relapse
Teeth shift slightly as people age. Retainers should remain part of life forever. Wear it several nights weekly after being released from treatment.

"I tell patients to put in their retainer every few days," Eisenhuth said as a provider of Minneapolis braces. "If it feels tight, that means your teeth have shifted, even if only slightly. Wear the retainer each night until it doesn't feel tight anymore."

An orthodontist is an expert who has completed an additional two to three years of training in tooth movement and is well-versed in a variety of treatments, so the chances of avoiding these "cons" are greater when seeking orthodontic treatment from an orthodontist.
