Local Connecticut residents are recovering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy many are also finding shingles on their yards, a possible result of improper installation says local expert, Smart Care Exteriors.

The shingle on the left is improperly installed with a nail almost 3.5 inches above where it should be placed. The shingle on the right is correctly installed.

As local residents are recovering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy many are also finding shingles on their yards, a possible result of improper installation says local expert, Smart Care Exteriors.

During the past week, Smart Care has fielded many requests for repairing fallen shingles. As a certified GAF contractor, they have the expertise and products to resolve these homeowners’ troubles. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy has unveiled many homes with improperly installed shingles.

Co-Owner Bruno Maini explains the situation:

During this time of year when the winds begin to pick up, we have an increased number of phone calls dealing with shingles blowing off homes. Upon arrival, we can immediately see the issue. If the shingles are not nailed properly by the installer in the first place, it’s hard to fix. We can replace the missing shingles correctly but the rest of the roof is still at stake. It is in the homeowners’ best interest to have their roofs installed correctly the first time around; especially with GAF shingles that are proven to withstand high wind speeds.

The popular GAF shingles available from Smart Care are sealed with Dura Grip Adhesive, reducing the risk of shingle blow-off. And as for hurricanes, these shingles are tested and warranted to withstand winds of up to 130 mph, far exceeding the reported wind gusts of Hurricane Sandy.

It’s also important for homeowners to know that some insurance adjusters may be unable to help their clients if the fallen shingles are the result of an improper installation. Depending on a reputable, knowledgeable roofer is the best decision when selecting a contractor for the job.

In business since 1990, Smart Care Exteriors is one of only sixty GAF certified contractors in Connecticut. They provide a complete range of roofing services including roof installation, repair, and maintenance, as well as roof vents and roof ventilation. They also offer gutter and downspout systems as the best defense against basement and crawl space flooding.
Smart Care Exteriors serves residential and commercial customers in Fairfield and New Haven counties including Stamford, Westport, Darien, Madison, Cheshire, Orange, Fairfield, East Haven, Trumbull, Guilford, and more!
