CEO Marsha Friedman Says Her Company Launched as a Pioneer of the Non-Retainer, ‘Pay for Performance’ PR Business Model.

EMSI Public Relations, has won dual awards from two respected business publications.

The 22-year-old business was named a 2012 Top 500 Company by Gulf Coast Business Review and one of the Top 75 Women-Owned Businesses by Tampa Bay Business Journal. It was a pioneer in “pay for performance” public relations when founded by CEO Marsha Friedman in 1990.

Back then, she says, hers was one of only four such agencies that she knew of in the nation.

“Since it was such a new concept, I had to figure things out as I went along,” she says. “It’s still an evolving frontier; even the definition of ‘pay for performance’ differs from one agency to another. Some define it as the action or service they provide, ‘We’ll write a marketing piece and you’ll pay X for that.’ ”

The company represents businesses, professionals, entertainers and authors, obtaining media coverage for them through a strategy Friedman developed and explains in her book, “Celebritize Yourself: The Three Step Method to Increase Your Visibility and Explode Your Business.”

At her company, “pay for performance” is defined by actual media exposure obtained by the company for its clients.

“In radio, for instance, a client may pay a per-interview fee to get booked on 15 talk shows within a given period of time. If we get them only 12 interviews, they can get a refund for three,” Friedman explains. “With TV, we book the interview first and bill the client after. In social media, we guarantee a certain number of connections each month. In print, we measure in terms of circulation or visitors per month.”

Clients say the approach is effective.

“We work with perhaps one of the only PR firms that actually uses a pay-for-performance model,” says Terry Murray, best-selling author and business consultant. “EMSI is the perfect fit for entrepreneurs looking to build their credibility, visibility and reach for a very reasonable investment.”

The company also has a news division, which specializes in providing content for print media and expert guests for broadcast media.

“We’ve become a trusted resource to whom media across the United States and Canada turn for experts who can address trending issues and breaking news,” Friedman says.
