Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue are diseases that rob an individual of independence and happiness, they are disorders that completely baffle the majority of the medical profession and the despair this lack of any definitive diagnosis or treatment causes the sufferer is devastating... An estimated 7% of the world’s population is affected by the disorder, according to the National Fibromyalgia Institute. Beyond the statistics are countless stories of people and families whose lives are irrevocably changed by this condition. In the new book “Parallel Universe”, author Sonya Davies shares how this disease propelled her on a remarkable odyssey that tested her resilience and deepened her notions of motherhood, family and love.
Sonya enjoyed a seemingly perfect life with her husband of 20 years, Mark, and their 13-year old daughter, Claudia. However, everything changed when Sonya found her daughter passed out on the floor of her bedroom suffering seizures. In the next five months, Claudia’s health deteriorated very quickly, she became unable to walk and had to use a wheelchair. The diagnosis was fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and Sonya was disheartened when told that there were no treatments available.
“Every corner I turned, every doctor or health professional I took her to could not help. I got nowhere. I hit brick wall, after brick wall. My daughter was spiraling into very poor physical condition and suffering deep despair as she was constantly being told that she was hysterical and that this condition was psychosomatic.”
In her insightful work, Sonya reveals how she and her family dared to fight against all odds. She recounts a troubling episode in their family history and most importantly shares how they were able to overcome it. It includes the research that the author used to help her daughter recover. “Parallel Universe” is at once a story of survival and hope and a triumphant testament of a mother’s love.
