Overcoming my chronic pain 20 years later, utilizing only a psychological approach, encouraged me to introduce these ideas to other sufferers of chronic pain

The inspiration behind Dr. James Alexander’s seminal new book, “The Hidden Psychology of Pain: The Use of Understanding to Heal Chronic Pain” (published by Balboa Press), was a personal one.

“The experience of being badly injured in a car accident as an 18-year-old led on to nearly 20 years of chronic pain,” shares Alexander. “The accident inspired me to become a psychologist so that I could help other people who had also been psychologically traumatized. Overcoming my chronic pain 20 years later, utilizing only a psychological approach, encouraged me to introduce these ideas to other sufferers of chronic pain.”

Chronic pain has been correctly described as the crisis at the heart of contemporary life, notes the doctor. Despite stunning advances in other areas of medical science, no similar breakthrough in the treatment of persistent pain is at hand – until now.

In “The Hidden Psychology of Pain” Alexander teaches pain sufferers, along with treating professionals, such as psychologists and physicians, the healing capacity of his psychological approach to overcoming chronic pain.

“People can overcome chronic pain, as it is not the untreatable blight on modern life which the ‘pain industry’ has led us to believe,” Alexander stresses. “In order to overcome chronic pain, sufferers need to delve into its causes in the form of psychological dilemmas, emotional distress and other repressed unconscious material. Chronic pain is not all in the head as it is a genuine physical experience, however by approaching it from a psychological angle, we are able to retrain our mind/brain towards healing the whole person.”
