IF a pick-up meets ones business commercial vehicle needs, the choice has never been broader, with single, extended and double-cab models available from a range of manufacturers. Ford’s new Ranger has just come out top of the crop in the International Pick-Up Award 2013, with judges praising its on- and off-road prowess, strong engine line-up, payload and towing capability, and safety.
The new Ford Ranger won the International Pick-Up Award 2013 after intensive testing at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, during which it was awarded 47 points – more than the combined number of points garnered by the pick-ups in second and third place.
Jarlath Sweeney, the Irish judge on the panel made up of commercial vehicle journalists, said: “The Ford Ranger is a great all-rounder, combining the perfect blend of on-road comfort and stability with off-road capability.”
The Ranger is said to be totally new from the ground up and to deliver a greater payload and class-leading towing capability, along with innovative new comfort and driver assistance features. It is the first vehicle of its type to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
The new Ford Ranger is produced in three cab bodystyles – Double, Super and Regular, and is among the roomiest in the class, according to Ford. It offers a choice of two Duratorq TDCi engines, and is available in two- or four-wheel-drive versions.
The International Pick-Up Award 2013 was presented to Ford by jury chairman Pieter Wieman at the recent Fleet Transport EXPO 12 event in Dublin.
Ford of Europe’s global commercial vehicles line director Paul Randle told Business Vans: “The Ranger is great for work and great for leisure, and customers will appreciate the difference as soon as they get behind the wheel. This prestigious award is testament to the work of our global product teams and there is plenty more for business van buyers to look forward to with the launch of the all-new Transit and all-new Transit Connect in 2013."
Ford has sold more than 7,000 Ford Rangers in the UK since it went on sale in 2010.
The International Pick-Up Award 2013 follows Ford’s International Van of the Year 2013 for the new Transit Custom and its 2012 award of International Engine of the Year for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine.
The judges' choice for second and third place in the International Pick-Up Award were the Isuzu D-Max and Volkswagen Amarok respectively.
