The Motif index tracks the performance of companies in demand after natural disasters; proceeds of motif trades to benefit storm victims.

Motif Investing, a pioneer in idea-based investing, announced today the creation of a Rebuilding After Sandy motif, a portfolio of 14 stocks across seven business segments that are focused on areas where governments, businesses and consumers could turn in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Rebuilding After Sandy is broken down into sectors such as building and utilities suppliers, roofers and self-storage operators. Some of the stocks are Lowe’s, Home Depot, Clean Harbors and Generac, a manufacturer of generators. The Motif Index will reflect the combined performance of the stocks in the portfolio.

“The effects of Hurricane Sandy were obviously devastating, and our hearts go out to the storm’s victims and those who are still struggling to regain essential services,” said Hardeep Walia, Motif’s CEO. “But as the recovery begins, we wanted to give people some new insights into the possible short- and long-term effects of the disaster—and a way to track the economic growth and job expansion that could come as the East Coast gets back on its feet. We’ve seen with past disasters that the financial impact can be quite significant.”

With a catalog of more than 80 portfolios, or motifs, of stocks and bond ETFs, Motif Investing provides people the opportunity to invest in real-world themes or investing strategies. Some motifs include Home Improvement, Fighting Fat, Biotech Breakthroughs and Dogs of the Dow.

In connection with launching the Rebuilding After Sandy motif, the company announced that it will donate proceeds equaling the commissions generated from all Rebuilding After Sandy motif trades through the end of the year to the American Red Cross.
