Today the SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC) began distribution of 60 first-responder “Go-Kits” in the greater Houston area. The rapidly deployable Go-kits are designed to assist first responders in the care and management of mass casualties. The Go-kits contain the key ICS position toolsets needed to mitigate an MCI early on as well as BLS-ready triage ribbon dispensers to ensure rapid primary triage and scene size-up by acuity.
“We have watched the MCI response processes evolve over the years and have determined this system is the first to combine all the best practices into a single definitive process.” said Aaron Patterson, EMS Transportation Manager of the SETRAC. “We selected the system because it is easy-to-use and can ensure optimal use of resources while enhancing patient care and accountability.”
The system Aaron is referring to is the EMT3 (Enhanced Method of Triage, Treatment, and Transport) solution developed by Disaster Management Systems, Inc (DMS) – the nation’s leading supplier of triage tags and MCI-related products. “We applaud the SETRAC’s decision to utilize EMT3” said Dennis Ortiz, CEO of DMS. “Their ability to recognize the need for a simplified yet proven-effective response tool shows they are on the forefront of improving MCI response and ensuring interoperability between agencies.”
The EMT3 system is based off the proven principle that primary triage is best conducted utilizing acuity-colored surveyors tape to mark patients. The 6-bay DMS ribbon dispenser allows for an accurate patient count by acuity to be easily recorded. It also contains a compartment for tourniquets, Oropharyngeal airways or other BLS supplies. Rounding out EMT3 is the 8-position Go-Kit that contains weatherproof ICS tools for the Triage Unit Leader, Treatment Unit Leader and managers, MedCom and ambulance loading and staging roles. The DMS All-Risk triage tags in the kit are used by treatment area managers as a secondary triage and treatment documentation tool that provides full patient accountability through the use of removable barcoded numbered receipts. A concise transportation receipt on the tag is removed during ambulance loading to document patient information and destination while the tag’s wristband is used by the receiving hospital to provide full continuity of care throughout the entire patient movement process.
The EMT3 system will be on display at the Texas EMS Conference in Austin, Texas, November 11-13th 2012 in the Disaster Management Systems’ booth #917.
