Dasu Enterprises Inc., a provider of outpatient addiction treatment services in The Woodlands, Champions, and Cypress areas is bringing David E. Smith. MD, FASAM, FAACT, Diplomate American Board of Addiction Medicine, to teach local clinical providers about the medicalization of addiction. Dr. Smith has been a pioneer in the treatment of addiction medicine and is the founder of the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinics in San Francisco, CA. He is the author of hundreds of books and articles and is actively involved in the addiction treatment field.
Dasu Enterprises Inc., TRS Behavioral Care, Inc., and Dominion Diagnostics are pleased to bring Dr. Smith to Right Step The Woodlands and to provide continuing education units to local therapists, counselors, and nurses. The definition of addiction has changed over the years and has grown to include processes and behaviors, such as gambling, shopping, and eating disorders. Dr. Smith will discuss the new definitions for addiction and its treatment as a medical issue.
David Hanna, President and CEO Dasu Enterprises Inc., states that "[I]n addition to the necessity of understanding addiction from a medical perspective to insure the best possible care for their clients, fluency in the medical model of addiction is essential to any clinician who receives funding from third-party payers, such as private health insurance, health maintenance organizations, Medicaid, or Medicare. Dr. Smith has been instrumental in the development of this understanding of addiction and will share his knowledge and experience with attendees. We are excited to bring a world-renowned doctor to The Woodlands who is a pioneer in treating the disease of addiction, and who has also accumulated life experiences such as reviving Janis Joplin from overdoses in the heyday of the Haight-Ashbury."
