Traverie's users don’t have to wait for friends or other people to sign up before they have a rich and valuable experience.

Traverie, its name derived of travel plus reverie, today announced the availability of Traverie.com, its friend-sourced interactive travel magazine. Traverie’s travel engine is free to use and integrates with Facebook to instantly aggregate a collection of trusted photos for each of the places where friends have traveled, helping people discover destinations and make informed decisions on where to go and what to do. While so many travel tools are concentrating on price comparison, Traverie.com is focused on uncovering the hidden experiences that best suit an individual’s preferences. Everyone has undergone the frustration of trying to identify the best place to go; web searches, and Facebook “polling” of friends are ineffective in really narrowing down destinations and explorations that are meaningful to each traveler. Traverie’s founding team brings deep expertise in search and user experience from Yahoo, Bing and Tivo, creating proprietary algorithms that deliver the most personalized and relevant results.
“The stakes are high when people decide to invest their time and money into travel; there is no wiggle room or patience for poor experiences,” says Gaurav Agarwal, CEO and co-founder of Traverie.com “As wonderful as it is for sharing, it is very hard to find things on Facebook. With our team’s background in search, we are able to unearth content from friends that many have never seen before, and then prioritize the pictures from destinations that would be most appealing to get to the heart of travel-related experiences that would inspire our users.”
In addition to generating personalized slideshows of travel adventures, Traverie.com is a platform that allows people to collect future travel ideas in “bucket lists,” as well as facilitates travel-related discussions that get very specific, such as asking friends directly “What part of Mexico was this photo of diving with dolphins taken?” These integrated features remove all the uncertainty surrounding travel and saves people the time, angst and effort that often accompany trip planning.
“An important distinction about Traverie.com is that our users don’t have to wait for friends or other people to sign up before they have a rich and valuable experience,” explains Agarwal. “On average a user has 300 friends on Facebook, but many have exceedingly more, and it is incredible how much travel content exists on Facebook through albums, check-ins, milestones and statuses. We’ve seen that our beta users are spending an average of six minutes viewing travel options generated from content across all of those connections. Making informed travel decisions derived from specific advice from a trusted network ensures people feel content when they arrive on their vacation.”
Traverie.com was founded in May 2012 and its three co-founders: Gaurav Agarwal; former senior product manager with Microsoft’s Bing; Jimming Cheng, former Sr. Sponsored Search Relevance Engineer at Yahoo!; and Tiffany Yang, former user experience designer at Tivo, attended Berkeley, Harvard and MIT universities, respectively. Traverie is currently bootstrapped and raising a seed round. The company recently won Chapman University’s 2012“California Dreamin’” Business Plan competition, was a finalist at the 2012 Berkeley Business Plan competition and has been invited to participate in the start-up innovation showcase at the PhoCusWright Travel Innovation Summit, which kicks off today at the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale, Arizona.
