Experts at Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-sized business-to-consumer companies, warn that while social media has exploded as an important platform in online marketing campaigns, without the proper tools, time, and experience, it could backfire; negatively impacting sales and reputations. The experts note that a perfect example of the importance of online social media and its growing impact is the recent U.S. presidential election.

Immediately following his re-election, the first thing President Barack Obama did was thank his supporters. He didn’t issue a statement to the media or post an e-mail; he sent a tweet. Only 22 minutes after tweeting “four more years,” it was retweeted 226,249 times.

When Obama was first elected President, Instagram didn't exist, Facebook was foreign to most adults and, at two years old, Twitter was a fledgling. On election night 2012, it took just 60 seconds for Twitter users to send half as many tweets as they did during the entire day on Election Day 2008. Over the last number of years, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn have evolved to become some of the most important online marketing and communication tools a business can use. Online social media is here to stay; and its importance to small- and medium-sized business growth is only going to increase.

“Now, small businesses are increasingly adopting social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to boost their business. At the same time, they’re struggling to devote adequate time and resources to their efforts,” says Andy Wu, Business Development Manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions.

“Search engine optimization and online social media campaigns can be a full-time job. There are very few small businesses that can dedicate the necessary manpower or the time to an online social media campaign. To avoid social media pitfalls, businesses need to actively follow their businesses online…whether they have a presence there or not,” he adds.

Wu states that one pitfall is not paying enough attention to the company’s Facebook profile or online social media platform. The other pitfall is thinking the company doesn’t need to worry about social media when they’re not on the Internet. This can be dangerous; if a company doesn’t use social media tools or even have an online presence, chances are people are talking about it and leaving reviews.

Wu notes, “Small businesses understand the value of social media. They're spending more time doing it, and investing more money into it at a faster rate. But the extra time and work can be taxing. What that means is small- and medium-sized companies need the direction, tools, and experience to help them navigate social media’s many nuances.”

Adding, “The old adage ‘there’s no such thing as bad press’ doesn’t hold true with the Internet. Business owners need to understand and be aware of the fact that online reviews and comments are a permanent record, and they will follow [them]. To combat this, companies need to have safeguards in place to protect their online reputation.”

“Numero Uno Web Solutions understands how important a targeted online social media marketing campaign is to driving qualified customers. We also understand how important a company’s online reputation is…whether the company is online or not. At Numero Uno Web Solutions, all of our packages include a social media component. We can even help those businesses that aren’t online build, develop, protect, and promote their online reputations,” he concludes.
