ScentWorld, LLC announced that Chandler Burr, an authority on scent and the Curator of the Department of Olfactory Art at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, will be the keynote speaker at the Gala Dinner on Feb. 7, 2013, during the ScentWorld annual conference. Mr. Burr will present a review of his perspectives and creative work with the Art of Scent: 1889-2012 exhibit.
Mr. Burr, the New York Times perfume critic from 2006-2010, is the author of the two definitive popular books about the perfume industry. Mr. Burr’s first book, "The Emperor of Scent” (2003) is about a genius of biophysics and perfume. "The Perfect Scent: A Year Inside the Perfume Industry in Paris & New York" tells parallel stories of the creation of two scents; one by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena for the luxury house Hermès and the other by Sarah Jessica Parker and Coty.
His latest work, The Art of Scent 1889-2012, is the first major museum exhibition to recognize scent as a major medium of artistic creation. The exhibition focuses on twelve works made between 1889 and 2012, and will include Jicky, created by Aimé Guerlain in 1889; Ernest Beaux’s Chanel N° 5 from 1921; Jean-Claude Ellena’s Osmanthe Yunnan from 2006; and Daniela Andrier’s Untitled, created in 2010. Each scent was selected by curator Mr. Burr to reveal the evolution of aesthetics in the medium or to illustrate major innovations in scent design. The exhibition runs from Nov 20, 2012 through Feb 24, 2013.
