Hertz Furniture, the premier school and office furniture supplier, has posted a new video on its School Matters Blog: Communicating with Students After a Natural Disaster. The video examines the impact a natural disaster such as Hurricane Sandy may have on students, feelings students may be dealing with as a result of the lethal storm (e.g., vulnerability, fear, and uncertainty about the future), types of reactions teachers may expect in the classroom, and most importantly, strategies on how to facilitate communication with students to help them feel safe in the aftermath of a major disaster.

The video, created by Hertz Furniture School Matters Video Blogger Kate Cohen, is of particular interest to educators and administrators in areas affected by the storm. Kate Cohen specializes in writing educational materials and holds a Masters degree in elementary education, a Masters degree in social work with a concentration in clinical practice in schools, and has worked as a classroom teacher and social work intern in the New York City public school system. Other posts on the School Matters Blog hosted by Hertz Furniture cover current educational topics such as bullying, school reform, technology in the classroom, and more.

"I encourage all teachers, principals, school administrators, and parents to watch our latest School Matters Blog video, which explores the impact Sandy may have on children and addresses strategies on how to help them restore a sense of safety and calm during these tumultuous times," says Hertz Furniture President Saul Wagner. "Thousands of families were uprooted from their homes during the storm, and it is imperative that we make classrooms and schools a safe place as soon as possible and learn how to help children express and cope with how they are feeling."

Furthermore, Hertz Furniture has announced its Sandy Relief Program, offering a 20% discount and QuickShip on almost 1,200 school and office furniture items from Academia, AmTab, Eurotech, NPS, OSC, and ScreenFlex. The offer, available by phone order only from now through Thanksgiving, is open to schools and others affected by the storm in NH, RI, MA, CT, NY, NJ, PS, DE, MD, DC, VA and WV. To access the discount, customers can contact their local Hertz Furniture representative or the Hertz Furniture Sandy Relief phone number at 888-494-3314.

Through Thanksgiving, Hertz Furniture has also pledged to donate a portion of all sales to The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
