Auto makers will now have the confidence to produce EVs, drivers around the world will be able to enjoy the convenience and benefits of DC Fast Charging, and station owners will be able to invest in DC infrastructure.

Aker Wade Power Technologies has announced that its DC Fast Charger meets the recently approved SAE standards for plug-in electric vehicles (EV), paving the way for company and EV industry growth. Aker Wade is the first US DC Fast Charger manufacturer to meet the new standard.

“With the release of the SAE standard and the deployment of SAE compliant DC Fast Chargers, car manufacturers will have the confidence to produce electric vehicles, drivers around the world will be able to enjoy the convenience and benefits of DC Fast Charging, and station owners will be able to invest in DC infrastructure,” explained Owen Resh, Aker Wade vice president and general manager, EV Products & Technology. “Together, these advantages will drive greater acceptance of EVs for everyday use.”

Late last month, SAE International announced that it had finalized technical standards for a DC fast-charging system that is being supported by both American and European plug-in vehicle makers. Developed jointly by more than 190 global experts representing automotive, charging equipment, utilities industries and national labs, "J1772™: SAE Electric Vehicle and Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge Couple" will enable charging time to be reduced from as long as eight hours to as short as 20 minutes. Until now, only a limited number of vehicles were capable of DC Fast Charging using the ChaDeMo protocol developed in Japan.

According to Mike Bucci, Aker Wade’s vice president of Global Sales, the company has been working closely with General Motors over the past year as part of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project to ensure SAE standard compatibility as the automotive manufacturer develops its next generation of electric vehicles.

“With automakers like GM supporting the SAE standard, it’s possible for potential station hosts to re-enter the market for DC Fast Chargers, knowing that their chargers will be compatible with vehicles from the vast majority of global automakers,” Bucci said. “And Aker Wade is ready to support infrastructure projects looking for an SAE DC solution.”

Aker Wade’s Sarge® DC Fast Charger that meets the SAE standards will be at the VERGE Conference in San Francisco, November 12-13.
