From North Africa's first secular University, to Uganda's largest, Africa.com has done the homework to list the very best tertiary institutions in Africa.

“We are very proud of our list of the best universities in Africa, and hope that it is a useful tool for those who seek a relative comparison of institutions of higher education on the continent”

Africa.com has released a list of the Top 10 Universities in Africa. From Egypt in the North, to Botswana down South, Africa.com has used both quantitative and qualitative data, along with an extensive network, to identify the best the continent has to offer.

Cairo University in Egypt is recognized as the Top University in Africa. With 45,000 students and a faculty of over 5,000, it's an institution that is also a popular choice among international students from the West wanting to study abroad. Others on the list include Makerere University in Uganda, alma mater to Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and former Tanzanian president H.E. Benjamin William; Nigeria's Lagos University that celebrates its Golden Jubilee this year; and the recently established Ashesi University in Ghana.

The final list of 10 passed rigorous criteria, including assessment of the quality and quantity of faculty research. The schools international appeal was also considered - this was rated by the number of foreign students registered at the institution.

“We are very proud of our list of the best universities in Africa, and hope that it is a useful tool for those who seek a relative comparison of institutions of higher education on the continent”, comments Teresa Clarke, CEO of Africa.com.

There's a reason you won't spot any South African Universities on the list. Africa.com made a determination to create two distinct lists: a) Africa, excluding South Africa, and b) South Africa. If we were not to have made this distinction, the Top 10 List would be dominated by South African universities, and would not be useful to those seeking a pan-African perspective. At the same time, Africa.com wanted to acknowledge the strength of South Africa's many world-class universities, so a Part II – exclusively listing the Top South African Universities - will also be released.
