New York, NY (PRWEB) November 13, 2012
On October 29th, Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast, crippling millions since it made landfall on New Jersey’s shoreline. At the height of its damage, 8.5 million people were without power between Western Indiana and Maine.
The cities endured the highest concentrations of damage, with a ripple effect of 12 square miles of New York City without all or most of the following: power, heat, water, subway or bus transportation, cell networks and even with a shortage of gas. However it is the suburban areas with above ground power lines that are enduring the worst of the storm; 1.1 million people are still without power, and most are unlikely to receive power for up to another 2 weeks.
FEMA has announced upwards $300 million in disaster assistance in the form of housing repairs, temporary housing, etc. but it will take weeks before that aid is determined, evaluated and dispersed to the people.
Meanwhile celebrities including Bon Jovi, Springsteen, Jon Stewart, Christina Aguilera, Jimmy Fallon, Sting and Kevin Bacon came together with NBC to join the network’s telethon for Hurricane Sandy on November 2nd; they raised $23 million and donated via the Red Cross. The Disney / ABC Television Group also raised over $16 million to donate to the Red Cross.
The Red Cross has sheltered over 3,500 victims of Hurricane Sandy; delivered over 4.8 million meals, snacks and bottled water; and deployed emergency blankets, flashlights, batteries, and the likes.
Amongst the over 5,000 volunteers who have been spearheading the recovery effort, celebrity couple Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake was spotted handing out supplies to an area hit hard, the Rockaways in Queens, NY.
Joining the efforts of the public and private sector, Smart Vitamin Club is pledging to donate 15% of all profits from sales to the relief of Hurricane Sandy storm victims. Smart Vitamin Club plans to gift to the profits through the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
