Drs. Zampella, Baskin and Chun return to SMG medical team

Edward Zampella, M.D., FACS, leads the team of three neurosurgeons who have returned to Summit Medical Group.

Summit Medical Group (SMG), New Jersey’s largest privately held multispecialty medical practice, announces the return of three neurosurgeons to its medical team: Edward Zampella, M.D. FACS, Jonathan Baskin, M.D., and Jay Young Chun, M.D., Ph.D. Drs. Zampella, Baskin and Chun return to practice in the Spine Center, Bensley Pavilion, at SMG’s 1 Diamond Hill Road campus.

In addition to his position at Summit Medical Group, Edward J. Zampella, M.D., FACS, is president of the medical staff and attending neurosurgeon at Overlook Medical Center, Summit, N.J. He also is attending neurosurgeon at Morristown Memorial Medical Center, Morristown, N.J., and clinical assistant professor of neurological surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School, Newark, N.J. Dr. Zampella is board certified in neurological surgery and pain management.

Dr. Zampella’s expertise includes functional, restorative, and stereotactic neurosurgery; stereotactic radiosurgery; brain and spinal tumors; spinal cord stimulation and intraspinal drug infusion; trigeminal neuralgia; neurosurgical treatment of movement disorders, tremor, and spasticity; refractory epilepsy; hydrocephalus, and endoscopic surgery. He is among few doctors on the East Coast to use the revolutionary CyberKnife®, which enables physicians to treat certain previously inoperable tumors.

Dr. Zampella has been managing partner of Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists, Morristown, N.J., the largest neurosurgical group in New Jersey and the fifth largest neurosurgical practice in the United States.

Dr. Zampella earned his B.A .in microbiology and philosophy at Rutgers College, New Brunswick, N.J., and his M.D. at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Birmingham, Ala. He completed his internship in surgery at Graduate Hospital under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and he completed residencies in neurological surgery at the University of Alabama Hospital and Clinics, Birmingham, and the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England. He completed his fellowships with the American College of Neurological Surgeons and American Association of Pain Management.

In addition to his position at Summit Medical Group, Jonathan J. Baskin, M.D., is a neurosurgeon with Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists. Dr. Baskin's clinical expertise includes complex spine surgery, tumors of the spine, minimally invasive techniques for spinal decompression and fracture stabilization, and image-guided neurosurgery for brain tumors and spinal stabilization.

Dr. Baskin earned his B.S. at Tufts University, Medford, Mass., and his M.D. summa cum laude at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore. After graduating, he completed his residency and clinical spine fellowship in neurological surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix.

Jay Young Chun, M.D., Ph.D., is vice president of Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists and director of neurotrauma at Morristown Memorial Medical Center. His expertise includes complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, surgery to place artificial discs, and general neurosurgery, including brain and pituitary tumors and skull base surgery. Dr. Chun is also one of few surgeons on the East Coast performing surgery with the CyberKnife®.

Dr. Chun earned his B.S. in biology at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., his M.A. at Columbia University, New York, and his M.D. at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Chun completed his complex spine fellowship at Emory Clinic, Atlanta.
