National Child Safety Advocates Partner with We Published That, L.L.C. For a New Book to Promote Child Safety

We believe knowledge is the ultimate defense. If we do not know HOW to avoid a dangerous situation, or recognize WHEN we are in a dangerous situation, then we are vulnerable.

Gary Martin Hays, Atlanta personal injury attorney and nationally recognized safety advocate, Adam Weart, social media specialist, and Mary Ellen Fulkus, Executive Director of Keep Georgia Safe, recently joined forces to co-write a book titled, The Authority On™ Child Safety: How To Talk To Your Kids About Their Personal Safety Without Scaring The Daylights Out Of Them. The book will be released by We Published That, L.L.C. - a publisher focused on helping authors brand themselves as The Authority On™ their areas of expertise.

The Authority On™ Child Safety will be published in December of 2012 and features in depth insight on how to deal with a wide range of safety scenarios. Topics covered include Bullying, Abduction Prevention as well as Internet Safety. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go directly to fund “Let’s Protect Our Kids,” a project of Keep Georgia Safe. The mission of Keep Georgia Safe, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, is to provide safety education and crime prevention training.

Keep Georgia Safe has a two-pronged approach to safety training and crime prevention:
1.) Proactive: Education Keep Georgia Safe provides safety education and crime prevention training through:

  •     radKIDS Training: Keep Georgia Safe coordinates and sponsors this transformational hands-on educational program that provides tools and skills for trainers to teach children on how to recognize, avoid, resist and escape violence, abduction and harm.
  •     School Curriculum Initiative: Curriculum for Georgia schools to teach age-appropriate safety empowerment programs and awareness.
  •     Media Campaigns: Public service information on safety education and crime prevention.
  •     Web and Electronic Outreach: Website content providing free safety tips and additional resources for proactive education and crime prevention.

2.) Reactive: Child Abduction Recovery Teams (CART) - Keep Georgia Safe coordinates and sponsors CART training and certification, a multi-disciplinary approach for first responders to recover missing or abducted children. All participating state and local agencies combine valuable resources and practice search techniques and strategies for the safe return of abducted children.

Gary Martin Hays is not only a successful lawyer, but is a nationally recognized safety advocate who works tirelessly to educate our families and children on issues ranging from bullying to internet safety to abduction prevention. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Elizabeth Smart Foundation. Gary has been seen on countless television stations, including CNN’s Headline News, ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX affiliates. Gary graduated from Emory University in 1986 with a B.A. degree in Political Science and a minor in Afro-American and African Studies. In 1989, he received his law degree from the Walter F. George School of Law of Mercer University, Macon, Georgia. His outstanding academic achievements landed him a position on Mercer’s Law Review. He also served the school as Vice President of the Student Bar Association.

His legal accomplishments include being a member of the prestigious Multi Million Dollar Advocate’s Forum, a society limited to those attorneys who have received a settlement or verdict of at least $2 Million Dollars. He has been recognized in Atlanta Magazine as one of Georgia’s top workers’ compensation lawyers. Gary frequently lectures to other attorneys in Georgia on continuing education topics. He has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Georgia since 2007 by the American Trial Lawyers Association, and recognized by Lawdragon as one of the leading Plaintiffs’ Lawyers in America. His firm specializes in personal injury, wrongful death, workers’ compensation, and pharmaceutical claims. Since 1993, his firm has helped over 27,000 victims and their families recover over $235 Million dollars.

In 2008, Gary started the non-profit organization Keep Georgia Safe with the mission to provide safety education and crime prevention training in Georgia. Keep Georgia Safe has trained over 80 state and local law enforcement officers in CART (Child Abduction Response Teams) so our first responders will know what to do in the event a child is abducted in Georgia. Gary has completed Child Abduction Response Team training with the National AMBER Alert program through the U.S. Department of Justice and Fox Valley Technical College. He is a certified instructor in the radKIDS curriculum. His law firm has given away 1,000 bicycle helmets and 14 college scholarships.

Starting with a BS in Industrial Design and a Certificate in Marketing from Georgia Tech, Adam Weart has spent the past decade providing unmatched design and services to clients, specializing in corporate branding, social media and web design.

Adam spent four years running Design and Engineering for HomeWaves while leading the initiative for branding, marketing and sales. During his leadership, HomeWaves achieved their industry’s most prestigious recognition by receiving 3 National CEDIA Awards.

A background in education and child protection instruction fully prepared Mary Ellen Fulkus for her post as Executive Director of Keep Georgia Safe, where she oversees all safety curriculum development and program implementation, community and media awareness. She also works as an Independent Consultant within the Criminal Justice Services Child Protection Training for Fox Valley Technical College, a U.S. Department of Justice initiative. Mary Ellen is founder of The Safe-T-Net, Inc. a safety and security training and consulting company for schools, businesses, adults and children.

In March of 2007, Mary Ellen participated in the CART (Child Abduction Response Team) AMBER Alert Training Conference in Houston, Texas. She is a nationally-certified r.a.d. (Resisting Aggression Defensively) KIDS Instructor and a participant in the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Training Conference on Crimes Against Children, in Pensacola, Florida.

A former 8th grade teacher, Mary Ellen completed a Graduate Leadership Certification Program in Public School Administration at The University of Georgia in 2004. She also earned a master’s degree in education from Mercer University in Atlanta, and received her undergraduate degree from Florida State University.
