Fort Lauderdale, FL: The Project for Natural Health Choices Inc. suggests limiting consumption of sugary drinks to reduce risk of stroke. This is in accordance with a new study conducted at the Osaka University in Japan that was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on October 17th 2012. The study found that the consumption of sugary drinks may dramatically increase the risk of suffering a stroke.
The researchers observed the consumption behavior of nearly 40,000 subjects over a five year periods. They found that the subjects that drank the most sugary drinks were 83% more likely to suffer a stroke than those that drank the least.
While the researchers note that the study doesn’t prove a cause and effect relationship, there have been several studies that have shown a correlation between sugary drinks and cardiovascular disease.
One such study conducted over several years showing this correlation was published in the journal of Circulation in March. The study found that men who drank sugary drinks daily had higher levels of triglycerides and lower levels of HDL or "good cholesterol", both are indicators of heart disease. Thus, the men who drank sugary drinks daily were 20 % more likely to have a heart attack.
