the gym is this microcosm of society and people are vulnerable. It’s a good place to torture characters, force them to expose that soft underbelly…no matter how many crunches they do.

Independent pilot GYMRATZ, produced by newly formed Free Radical Pictures, has Hollywood pumped up, attracting industry attention and audience laughs at the New York Television Festival. Featuring the iconic Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers, Reno 911!: Miami) Cathy Shim (Balls of Fury), Ryan McCann (Visioneers), Tony Cavalero (YouTube sensation) and a stellar ensemble cast, the show is providing a strong launching point for freshman writer/director, Hunter Phillips.
GYMRATZ initially gained heat when the show teaser was selected for the funnyordie homepage (http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/3acb6205a6/gymratz-teaser), where it currently has a 91% Funny rating and nearly 27k views. The show, a single camera half hour comedy, centers around a dysfunctional family of trainers, clients and staff at the fictitious suburban Chicago gym, Gauntlet Fitness.
When asked to comment Phillips said, “…the gym is this microcosm of society and people are vulnerable. It’s a good place to torture characters, force them to expose that soft underbelly…no matter how many crunches they do. But really the gym is just a different kind of home for this crazy, eccentric, utterly ridiculous family...”
Phillips is also currently shopping two features, one with Lion King director Roger Allers on board to direct. Phillips is principal at Free Radical Pictures.
