According to the National Cancer Institute, 2,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with malignant brain tumors each year, and the mortality rate is approximately 40 percent. The sorrow of having lost loved ones, particularly children, to cancer is shared by thousands of families in America, and countless more around the world. In her newly published book, Love and Miss You, author Sue Ellen Dunlap recounts her late son Michael’s battle with cancer, and how he bravely faced each new day.
The account begins with how Michael suddenly suffered seizures and had to be admitted into the emergency room, the seeming return to normalcy as the episode subsided, before another attack, and the subsequent biopsy and its heartbreaking results. Afterwards, Michael had to undergo surgery to excise the tumor, and withstand a battery of chemo and radiation therapy, before recuperating and continuing his academic pursuits. He eventually entered graduate school with the goal of becoming a college professor. But the cancer recurred, and with it came further rounds of surgery and chemotherapy. Despite this, Michael endured and tried to live a full life, with his loving family and dear friends supporting him, even as things took a turn for the worse.
“This is my son Michael’s story. He had hoped to write a book himself, but brain cancer had other plans. I hope to do the story justice with the help of Michael’s love and spirit,” Dunlap shares. Love and Miss You is a touching account about Michael’s life, as well as that of his family, his friends, and his loved ones, how the battle with cancer affected all of their lives, and how those around Michael dealt with his passing.
Those seeking to understand the human toll of cancer, and its effects on those suffering from it as well as their loved ones, will find Love and Miss You to be a sincere and resonant account. It is the story of countless families throughout America and the world. It is the story of Michael Dunlap.
