On November 13, commuter bikes manufacturer Linus Bike comments on an article published by the LA Times which reports that after two cyclists were killed in separate accidents involving automobiles, thousands of cyclists gathered to honor the memory of Dr. Catherine "Kit" Campion Ritz and Sarah Leaf. The cyclists’ mission was to bring awareness and raise money for bicycle safety. Linus Bike, advocates for bicycle safety, honors the memory of both cyclists and commemorates the movement of the mourning cyclists.
Over a thousand cyclists gathered to honor the memory of the fallen cyclists reviving the Newport Beach area’s awareness of bicycle safety, reports the LA Times. Newport Beach Councilman Rush Hill believes, according to the LA Times, that the awareness level of drivers and bicyclists has improved significantly.
According to the article, David W. McGill, deputy chief and patrol/traffic division commander of the Newport Beach Police Department, stated that cyclists and drivers should be aware of the rules of the road.
“The streets were made for cars,” says McGill. “There's no getting around that. But our goal right now is education. This event, and events like this, is going to help educate the public, not only the motorists but also the bicyclists. People have got to know the rules of the road and what bicyclists can and can't do. This is one event of many that are going to be coming up in the city.”
China Reevers, Linus Bike representative, offers sincere condolences on behalf of cyclists everywhere. “As a leader in bicycle advocacy it is tragedies like these that push Linus Bike forward and drive our cause to great heights,” comments Reevers. “Linus Bike will continue to advocate bicycle safety throughout the country for as long as cars and bicycles share the road.”
Councilman Hill commented to the LA Times that, "Improved safety comes from those two entities understanding each other and showing compassion for one another." Hill added, "We can paint all kinds of things on roads and put all kinds of signs up, but until the individuals in the cars are aware of what's going on, and until the bicyclists follow the traffic laws, then safety will be even greater than it is today."
“We agree that it takes two parties to make a difference in road safety. Linus Bike will continue to educate cyclists everywhere in road safety,” comments Reevers. “Dr. Catherine ‘Kit’ Campion Ritz and Sarah Leaf will be remembered by us all and we will persevere.”
