On November 19, Lorna Kleidman, kettlebell fitness instructor, comments on an article published by The Huffington Post regarding celebrity weight loss after pregnancy. Kleidman responds to celebrity weight loss as a “high expectation” for average women.
The Huffington Post reported that most health care practitioners are not “discuss[ing] weight management sufficiently with pregnant patients,” resulting in the obesity epidemic that plagues Americans.
“The expectation of getting back into your skinny jeans within weeks of delivery is ludicrous,” The Huffington Post quoted Adrienne Youdim, MD. “At the same time,” Youdim notes, “childbearing is a common period when young women are vulnerable to gaining weight that is never lost.”
The Huffington Post reports “Gaining too much weight increases a mother’s chance of developing diabetes, high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia, and of needing a Cesarean section. It also sets her children up for health problems. Research shows that these offspring are more than four times at risk of being overweight at age 3 than those whose mothers gained an appropriate amount of weight.”
“Weight loss can be a struggle for most,” comments Lorna Kleidman, Three-time kettlebell champion. “I meet many women who struggle with weight loss and tell me that they wish that they could look like the women on the cover of magazines. I encourage woman to eat healthfully and exercise to their potential; working hard and persevering is what delivers results.”
One of the best methods to maintain a healthy weight, reports The Huffington Post, is to exercise throughout pregnancy. Sarah Kilpatrick, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, commented on celebrity weight loss stating, “[B]e realistic. To expect to take all of your weight off in less than six months is just adding more stress that you don’t need.”
“Creating too high of an expectation for weight loss can be stressful. Women will try the fad diets that could ultimately end up being dangerous and counterproductive,” comments Kleidman. “You mustn’t lose your health while trying to lose the excess weight.”
