The 5K Run / Walk will return to Waterfront Properties and Club Communities’ popular residential and mixed-use community.

Abacoa will be the site of Miles for Makayla.

Waterfront Properties and Club Communities Managing Partner Rob Thomson said the Miles for Makayla event is one that makes residents who live in Abacoa proud to be a part of the development and establishes the town of Jupiter a standout community.

On Nov. 17, the memory of a 6-year-old girl named Makayla Joy Sitton will be cherished, celebrated and spread throughout the community as nearly 1,000 volunteer runners gather at Abacoa in Jupiter for a fundraiser.

The family-friendly Miles for Makayla 5K Run / Walk will fill the Abacoa neighborhood with recreational and professional runners and walkers who will stride in spirit for Makayla and raise money for the foundation set up in her name.

Runners can register onsite beginning at 6 a.m. The 5K Run / Walk gets under way at 7:30 a.m., and a full slate of children’s activities begins at 8 a.m. Activities include Makayla’s Mile, a one-mile walk that begins on University Boulevard and winds through the streets with Abacoa townhouses for sale, ending up on Town Center Drive. A 100-yard dash targets children ages 4 through 7, and a 25-yard dash is for little ones ages 2 and 3. There’s also a Diaper Dash that will take place on the amphitheater grass for toddlers and babies.

This year marks the second for Miles for Makayla, a charity event established following the Thanksgiving Day tragedy in 2009, which took her life, along with the lives of three others. Makayla’s parents, Jim and Muriel Sitton, established the Makayla Joy Sitton Foundation in an effort to keep their daughter’s legacy alive while providing arts grants and education scholarships for local children in need. The inaugural event raised close to $17,000 and drew 700 participants.

The money funds singing lessons, dance classes, music instruction and other creative pursuits for children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in them. The goal of the foundation is to sponsor programs that enrich the minds and spirits of deserving children in Palm Beach County and making their dreams come true.

Hundreds of runners, walkers and teams have signed up for Miles for Makayla, including 300 girls from the upstart Girls on the Run program, Girls on the Run, a nonprofit off Southern Boulevard near the estates in Palm Beach, has a mission of instilling confidence and joy in girls by integrating running into their curriculum.

Sponsors include WPTV-TV, WRMF-FM, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, Florida Power & Light, Jumby Bay Island Grill and Turtle River Montessori, a one-of-a-kind school next to The Loxahatchee Club.

Other sponsors include Church in the Gardens, Partners in Women’s Health and PNC Bank.
Volunteers are needed at the event, as are donations, both monetary and in-kind. Event organizers said the support so far has been overwhelming.

Registration fees range between $15 and $30, depending on the age of the participant, and include an information packet, a T-shirt, all activities, a pancake breakfast and awards medals for the top finishers. Abacoa is east of Interstate 95 between Donald Ross Road and Indian Creek Parkway.
