It is meant to show people no matter how humble your life began if you have the faith and desire you too can make it.

When Anna R. Coley learned that many of the younger members of her family were not familiar with their family history, she set out to teach them to appreciate the struggles of their ancestors. Her book “From Whence We Came: Good Old Days” (published by iUniverse) explores such family stories as her great-grandfather’s life as a slave and other tales of survival.
“From Whence We Came” is a celebration of Coley’s family history – the Pierce/Bond family. In it, she works to show her relatives – both current and future generations – where they came from and the values that their family has cherished on their journey through history together. She shows her family the love that their ancestors had for each other, showing her people that love for each other is enough to get them through any of their struggles.
An excerpt from “From Whence We Came”:
“My great-grandfather had a distinction that only a remaining few, if any, African Americans are able to claim. He could tell you his monetary value at the age of six; he also had the original bill of sale to prove his claim. When he was six years old, he was sold as a slave to clear up a debt of his master, who at the time was James H. Dykes.”
Coley wrote “From Whence We Came” primarily for her family, to honor her ancestors and to educate the younger generation. “This book is about family struggles and accomplishments,” she explains. “It is meant to show people no matter how humble your life began if you have the faith and desire you too can make it.”
